Hands-On Ways to Explore and Learn This Season

With warmer days and blooming plants, spring is the perfect time to reconnect with nature and embrace outdoor learning. A skilled governess can bring the magic of the season to life by planning engaging, hands-on spring learning activities for kids that spark curiosity and creativity. As children become more aware of the world around them, they naturally begin to notice changes in color, texture, and shape—making spring an ideal opportunity to introduce foundational concepts about nature, growth, and our environment in a meaningful and memorable way.

Incorporating spring educational activities for kids into daily routines helps nurture observation, critical thinking, and a lasting appreciation for the natural world. Below are a few creative and enriching ways a governess can make the most of the season:

Watch the Colors of the Wind with Pinwheels

Pinwheels—dating back to ancient China—are both playful and educational. They make a cheerful outdoor decoration while also offering a simple introduction to wind and motion. Children can observe how changes in wind speed affect movement, sparking early conversations about energy and the natural elements. For an added activity, create your own pinwheel together using this guide:

Color Hike or Scavenger Hunt

Turn a simple walk into a vibrant learning experience with a color-themed nature hunt. Using an egg carton or small container, children can collect items like flower petals, leaves, or stones in different colors. This activity encourages observation, sorting, and early organizational skills. For added excitement, turn it into a scavenger hunt—searching for signs of spring like blooming flowers, birds, or insects awakening after winter.

Nature Yoga: Movement Meets Mindfulness

Introduce children to simple, nature-inspired yoga poses such as tree pose, butterfly pose, or frog pose. This activity promotes balance, coordination, and body awareness while encouraging a calm and mindful connection to the outdoors. Whether practiced in a backyard or park, nature yoga is a wonderful way to blend physical activity with relaxation.

Painting Rocks: Creative Outdoor Expression

Collect smooth stones and transform them into miniature works of art. Painting rocks allows children to express creativity while connecting with their surroundings—whether recreating flowers, animals, or abstract designs inspired by nature. It’s a simple yet impactful way to support emotional expression and fine motor skill development.

Grow a Garden: Hands-On Learning in Action

Gardening with children is one of the most rewarding spring activities for kids. From planting seeds to watering and watching them grow, children experience firsthand the process of nurturing life. This activity teaches patience, responsibility, and the basics of biology. Whether it’s a small windowsill herb garden or a backyard plot, gardening offers a meaningful way to connect with the season.

Learn About Life Cycles

Exploring life cycles can be both magical and educational for elementary-aged children. Butterfly kits, for example, allow children to observe the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly in real time. Similarly, growing plants from seeds reinforces the concept of growth and change. These experiences make science tangible and help children develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Enjoy a Spring Book in the Sunshine

Take learning outdoors by pairing a picnic with storytime. Reading in the fresh air creates a relaxed and engaging environment for children to explore new ideas. Some wonderful spring-themed books include:

  • When Spring Comes by Ekaterina Trukhan
  • The Berenstain Bears’ Big Book of Science and Nature by Stan and Jan Berenstain
  • Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies
  • What’s Inside a Flower? by Rachel Ignotofsky
  • Nature Anatomy: The Curious Parts & Pieces of the Natural World by Julia Rothman

Spring offers endless opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection. These spring learning activities for kids not only keep children engaged but also foster curiosity, independence, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

If you’re considering hiring a governess or more traditional nanny to bring thoughtful, enriching experiences like these into your home, the experienced team at ƹapp would be delighted to assist. Turning Everyday Cleanup into Games Kids Love

Involving children in the day-to-day running of the home is a wonderful way to foster autonomy and build confidence. It encourages independence while giving them the opportunity to practice essential life skills. While some parents may worry that certain tasks are too complex for young children, research suggests that the earlier children are introduced to household responsibilities, the more capable and confident they become over time. As a society, we often underestimate just how much our youngest learners can handle. By creating opportunities for children to participate in chores, we are sending a powerful message: “I trust you, and I know you are capable.”

In honor of National Spring Cleaning Week, here are five creative ways to make tidying up both fun and engaging:

1. Make Cleanup Interactive and Imaginative

Let imagination take the lead! Try incorporating playful tools like dinosaur grabber claws, butterfly nets, or other fun accessories to make cleanup feel like a game. For an added twist, introduce classics like “the floor is lava” to transform everyday tidying into an adventure.

2. Bring on the Sparkle

No one enjoys being told to clean a room—especially when it means putting things into plain bins and shelves. Before diving into organizing, give children creative freedom to personalize their spaces. Decorating storage bins with stickers, rhinestones, or adding tinsel to closet doors can make the process feel exciting and ownership-driven.

3. Swiffer/Mop Hockey

If your floors could use a refresh, turn cleaning into a game! Set up two “goal posts” (open doorways work perfectly), use a lightweight object as a puck (like a plastic container lid), and let kids use Swiffers or mops to score goals. Just be sure the “puck” is floor-safe to avoid scratches.

4. Gotta Catch Them All!

Hide small treats, stickers, or trinkets—perhaps themed around your child’s favorite characters—throughout areas that need tidying. Let them know how many items they’re searching for to create a fun, goal-oriented treasure hunt that naturally encourages cleaning along the way. You may have seen the viral story about people hiding mini rubber ducks around their home as a “test” for their housekeeper—not something we’d ever recommend in a professional setting—but it does inspire a lighthearted and engaging way to motivate kids to clean!

5. Toy-Basket Basketball

Perfect for older children, this game turns putting things away into a friendly competition. Set up baskets and challenge kids to toss toys or clothes in from a distance. Add upbeat music for extra energy, and keep score to make it even more exciting.

Why Cleaning Games Matter for Child Development

These types of organization games not only make cleaning enjoyable, but they also support the development of important life skills. Learning to maintain an organized environment fosters independence, responsibility, and a sense of pride in one’s space.

If you’re looking for more guidance, explore our tips on age-appropriate chores for children to help build independence and confidence at every stage.

When it comes to learning outside the classroom, finding the right balance between education and entertainment can be tricky. Kids are smart and can spot a disguised worksheet from a mile away, so how do we make education fun? One of our favorite ways is through educational games. This way, schoolwork can feel more like playtime, just ask any experienced governess! A modern-day governess does more than supervise and tutor. They create engaging, age-appropriate learning opportunities that blend seamlessly into everyday life.

Here are some governess-approved favorite educational games:

Math Bingo

Put a twist on classic bingo by creating a bingo card tailored to your child’s math level! Whether its addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, sharpening math skills can be fun with this engaging game.

Story Cubes

Boost creativity and vocabulary with story cubes! Grab a pair of dice and add photos of your children’s favorite things, like dogs or horses. Roll the dice, and whoever rolls must create a story that includes the images they landed on.

Geography Scavenger Hunt

Turn maps and globes into exciting discovery tools! Hide clues around the house or backyard with questions like, “Find the country where Big Ben is” or “How many continents are there?”

DIY Science Lab

Transform your kitchen into a mini science lab! With simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring, kids can explore chemistry and cause-and-effect experiments hands-on.

Word Ladder Races

Start with one word, like “bat,” then change one letter at a time to form new words. For example: bat, cat, cut, cup. This fun game sharpens spelling, vocabulary, and phonetic skills.

Language Apps

Language apps like Duolingo or Khan Academy Kids are excellent for improving language skills. They’re especially great for car rides or other similar outings.

When school is out for summer, the house can quickly become a whirlwind of toys and crafts. But with the right strategies, summer doesn’t have to mean chaos. During these long breaks from school, it can be the perfect time to introduce children to the importance and fun of keeping tidy—that’s right, cleaning up can be fun! With the help of a skilled nanny, organization and cleaning can change from being a chore into a game and an afternoon of fun. These activities can not only help build positive habits and responsibility in your children but also help keep the house in order. Here are some of our favorite organization games for kids:

1. Timed Toy Clean-Ups: Turning Speed into a Superpower

Set a timer, start your favorite superhero movie soundtrack, and shout, “Go!” This is especially great for high-energy kiddos who find it exciting to race against the clock. This can also help teach time management and quick decision-making.

2. Freeze! Everybody Grab Your Toys!

Shouting “Freeze!” randomly during chores can add an exciting element that keeps everyone on their toes! Everyone has to try to get as much done before the next freeze; otherwise, you might get frozen in an inconvenient moment!

3. Sorting Challenges: Tidy Up and Tune In

Does this go in a drawer or on the shelf? In the closet, maybe? Sorting challenges ask kids to think critically about where different items belong. This can even be more fun with “mystery boxes”—nannies fill a box with a mix of objects, and the little ones have to sort as quickly as possible. This can help promote spatial awareness and categorization.

4. Color-Coded Closet Organizing: A Rainbow of Responsibility

Who doesn’t love rainbows? By organizing clothing by color, kids can flex their creativity and even add a nice visual to their spaces.

5. Reward-Based Chore Charts: Gamifying Responsibility

Reward-based chore charts can be a great motivational tool for kids of all ages. Pro Tip: Make a summer-themed chart with sunny and ice cream stickers. Once they collect enough stickers, try a reward like earning a small treat or having a movie night! This can help promote goal-setting and consistent effort.

Why Organization Games Matter and How the Right Nanny Can Help

While these types of organization games are not only fun and help keep your household running smoothly, they are also important for further developing crucial life skills in your children. Organization fosters independence and gives your kids a sense of self in their environment. Ready to make the summer both organized and playful? Let us help you find the perfect nanny to help keep your little ones engaged, learning, and thriving! Please email us at info@nannyauthority.com or call us at (973) 466-2669 to get started.

Gifts of any size, big or small, are a great way to show appreciation for the amazing people in your life. Take advantage of Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, or even just a random day to thank those who make a difference in your life this spring season! At ƹapp, one of our favorite ways to show we care is through D.I.Y. pressed flower cards!

Check out the tips below for the best way to get started making these:

For this craft, you will need a blank notecard, PPA (Perfect Paper Adhesive) glue, a small paintbrush, and some pressed flowers. Pressed flowers are sold at craft stores and online, but if you’d like to add extra love and creativity to your card, go pick flowers and press them at home! If you don’t know your loved one’s favorite type of flower, try going for their favorite color. TNA Tip: If your loved one likes to read, make a pressed flower bookmark instead of a card!

DIY Pressed Flower Art

If you press your flowers, stick to a smaller size. Larger plants with thick stems or bulbs are not ideal for flattening. Grab a large book and open it halfway. Use tissue paper to protect the book’s pages, and lay the flower as flat as possible. Remember, however you arrange your flower while it’s being flattened is how it will stay. We recommend laying everything out on the notecard before doing this step. Once everything is in place, carefully close the book, then stack a few heavy books or objects on top of it. Be sure to leave it in a well-ventilated area for faster drying. The flower is done drying once it becomes brittle and unable to bend or fold. This process can take up to one to two weeks, so plan accordingly if you’re going this route for your card.

Once your flowers are ready, take a small paintbrush and apply a thin layer of PPA glue to the back of them. Adults—be sure to help younger children with this step— the flowers are fragile, and glue can cause a sticky situation really fast! After your flowers are secured and the card is completely dry, apply a thin layer of glue over the top. Remember: slow and steady wins the race! Add any additional card decor you like, and presto! Your diy-pressed flower art is ready for gifting!

Crafts Increase Motivation and Creativity

Pressed flower crafts for kids are a great way to get them outside and their creative brains churning! Making a handmade card is a beloved and kind way of showing someone you appreciate them.

If you are looking for someone to help bring a little extra creativity to your child’s life, reach out to the ƹapp today. Check out our website at or email us at info@nannyauthority.com.

It’s no secret that one of the best ways to stay cool in the summer heat is with pool days and water activities for kids! Not only is this a great way to have fun, but playing in the pool can also keep the family active and promote better overall health. If you’re looking for some exciting water activities for your children, check out some of our go-to summer favorites:

Swim Games

For kiddos who love to swim, try some of these:

  • Obstacle course: Use pool floats, noodles, hula hoops, and anything else you think may enhance the fun! This great customizable activity can be adjusted for any skill level.
  • Mermaids: This one is perfect for strong swimmers with great imaginations! To add an extra dose of magic, you can buy a mermaid tail like the one listed
  • Relay Race: This one is best suited for large groups. Get the whole family to play!
  • Deep Divers: Use pool toys that do NOT float and scatter them across the floor. See who can deep dive to get the most!
  • New-Do: Come up with the best ways to style your hair in the pool, such as with the classic George Washington or Princess Lea buns!
  • Cannon Ball Competition: Who can come up with the most creative way to jump into the pool?!
  • Splash Dance: Create your own synchronized swimming routine! Complete by choreographing the best songs of the summer!
  • Monkey in the Middle: A classic that’s great for all!
  • Racehorse: Using a pool noodle as your racehorse, see who crosses the finish line first.
  • Dive-in movie: Set up an outdoor projector near the pool, and complete with your favorite pool floats to relax on during the film!

Remember, no matter how strong of a swimmer they might be, water safety should never take a backseat to fun. Always have an alert adult to monitor that everyone is staying safe. Check out this link to the Red Cross for water safety tips:

Games Without a Pool

While pool days are a blast, they’re not the only way to enjoy the water. The below activities for kids are great if you don’t have a pool available to you, don’t swim, or have children who may not be old enough to play those games quite yet. Here are some exciting options that you don’t have to get in the water for:

  • Pool Deck Portraits: Using a regular pool, kiddie pool, or even a bowl of water, get some paintbrushes and “paint” on the ground outside in a race against the sun! Can you finish your picture before the sun dries it?
  • Water Balloon Toss: How many times can you throw it back and forth before it breaks?!
  • Icy Treasure: Fill large silicone trays with small toys and water then freeze them. When they’re frozen, try to figure out how to get them out! Pro tip: This one is especially fun with toys affected by temperature, such as color-changing Hot Wheels!
  • Water Table: Available at places such as Amazon and Costco— is a great sensory activity for young kiddos.
  • Spray Bottle Freeze Tag: This one is especially great for those with a big yard or at your local park! If you have older children, try replacing spray bottles with water blasters.

Quick water safety tips to get you in the pool and off the towel.

Who does not love soaking in the sun between June and August? Summer is a wonderful time of the year when families can rest and recharge in between the school season and often splish and splash in the water to beat the summer heat. While water offers ample opportunities to cool off, build confidence and have fun, it is important to remember that water poses a great threat, particularly to young children. Statistically speaking, more children ages 1-4 die from drowning than any other cause of death. Here are some water safety tips to keep your children safe while enjoying summertime.

SWIM LESSONS

  1. First and foremost, providing children with the resources necessary to float, tread water, swim, and enter and exit the water are life-saving skills. Swim lessons instill confidence in both children and parents to ensure everyone can enjoy the water safely. Learning to swim can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, especially in toddlers through adolescent children.

INFANT SWIMMING RESOURCE

  1. While conventionally, swim lessons are often reserved for older toddlers and children, some families have begun investing in water safety programs such as Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) to provide even the youngest beachgoers with the possible skills needed to survive finding themselves alone in the water. Unlike traditional swim lessons, ISR focuses on skills such as flipping over and learning to float for children 6 months and up in the case of an emergency. For families who may have pools in their yards or homes that are easily accessible to the ocean’s edge, it can be far too easy for little ones to find themselves in a dangerous situation. While there is research that supports the efficacy of self-rescue programs, not all parents are proponents of the ISR method, citing concerns over possible trauma they fear with ISR programs. You can read more about ISR .

BARRIERS

  1. The difference a secure barrier or fence can make with water safety cannot be understated. Too often, preventable accidents happen where children stray from a supervising eye and reach for a toy that fell into a pool or excitedly go into the bathtub while a caregiver or parent is grabbing something from a separate room. Pools should have secure, self-latching gates to prevent children from entering a pool area unsupervised. The pool fences should clearly separate play areas in your yard from any swimming areas. The same rules apply to those with access to nearby beaches, though this is often less of a concern. In regards to water safety in your home, we advise against leaving children unattended in the bathroom with a full bathtub, and if you need to step away from a child during bathing, physically remove little ones from the area while your attention is elsewhere.

COLORS

  1. Less thought of, but equally important is what you choose to dress your baby and toddlers in when going to enjoy the ocean air or sit poolside. Color selection can play a crucial role in helping to keep your kids safe and the brighter the better! In an emergency, popular colors such as light blue, white or green can be hard if not nearly impossible to see when fully submerged.

FLOTATION DEVICES

  1. Make sure you have age-appropriate life jackets when you are around natural bodies of water whether that be a lake, ocean, or even a pool – even if your child knows how to swim. Life jackets and flotation devices are excellent precautions to take when on a family boating trip or enjoying jet skis!

BRING A BUDDY

  1. Children should never be left to swim alone. While this may be an obvious tip, reminding children to wait for an adult and ensure there is supervision in the form of a caregiver or lifeguard is important!

The above are just a few ways to keep your children safe when going for a swim this summer. Heading to your next outing prepared can look different depending on what kind of body of water you may be heading to. Keep kids prepared and talk about what to do if they find themselves alone in a pool area and how to stay safe at the beach by spotting riptides and how to handle the situation if they are caught in one. The summer is a time to unwind, stay cool, and have fun, and with a little bit of mindfulness and a great team that prioritizes safety around your family, you can have the best summer ever!

What to do during the summer months varies from family to family and can be a very personal choice. You want to give your children the opportunity to recharge during their school break. However, more than likely, you still want them engaged in an activity or two and enjoying time with friends! Participating in a summer camp is a great way to hone in on your children’s interests, encourage independence, make time for play and teamwork, and encourage screen-free activities. There are a plethora of camp options for kids. Sitting down to go over your summer camp plans should be an inclusive effort for parents, caregivers, and their children. In general, you should expect any camping experience to help your child build a sense of community, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, opportunities to explore different interests and engage in plenty of outside time.

Here are some ideas to get you into the camping spirit!

Sleepaway Camp

Your family may have a long-standing tradition of attending the same sleepaway camp, summer after summer. Sleepaway camp is an incredible opportunity for children to develop who they are as individuals, apart from their parents for the first time. Children are gently pushed beyond their comfort zones and can build life skills. They can also learn to be a part of a community. Sleepaway camp could be a great fit for your family. Some camps offer short-term options (1-2 days up to a week). For instance, children can “test the waters” before committing to a full summer away from home. Parent Map shares the benefits of sleepaway camp . There is a strong sense of community when sleeping away at camp between campers, counselors, and staff who share the summer, especially year after year.

Day Camp

A day camp is a fantastic option for the child who may not be interested in a summer sleeping away from home but is interested in a camping experience. Day camp provides the opportunity for children to spend the day away from home engaging in sports, crafts, team building, personal development, boating activities, and so much more! Children are still able to build confidence and independence in a camping environment. However, they get to go home at the end of the day.

Sports, Music Camps, and more!

There are so many camps geared towards children’s specific interests; Sports, Music, Theater, and Art are just a few we can think of off the top of our heads. Regardless of what kind of camp your child is interested in, you can feel confident that each environment will offer your child positive role models and reinforce skills they are working on during the school year. Also, every camp creates opportunities to socialize and build friendships with other kids who share their interests. They also create opportunities for personal growth and skill building. Let’s break down what the four above camps may offer your child this summer!

Sports camps tend to have a heavier focus on specific sporting interests or an athletic day-to-day experience. Some sports camps are full-day programs. The primary purpose of any sports summer program is to immerse children in specific skill development for their preferred sporting activity. These camps help improve athletic techniques and develop children’s passion during the off-season for some sports (like football or baseball camp!).

For Music and Fine Art programs, parents should expect children to have an immersive learning experience that fosters a love for their child’s chosen activity typically with opportunities to showcase developing skills in a concert format during the middle or end of summer.

None of this sounds great to me, anything else?

OF COURSE! There is something for everyone. If your child is particularly interested in technology or robotics, there is likely a summer program in your area that can tap into their love for STE(A)M. Children who enjoy time in nature and do well around animals may have the opportunity to attend camp programs at a local farm or zoo. In this day and age, if you can think about it, the odds are that it may already exist.
